How old does my child need to be to learn an instrument?

Your child should be at least six years old when classes start in February. We recommend all primary school children beginning their music education learn the recorder or keyboard.

Can I enrol my child after enrolment day?

Late enrolments will be accepted up to two weeks after classes commence  if there are spaces available.

Do you provide refunds?

If your child withdraws from his or her class before the class starts, you will be entitled to a full refund of fees. There will be no refund if your child withdraws once a class has started.

How much do classes cost?

Our teachers are subsidised by the Ministry of Education. We charge an annual administration fee of $185, and hireage fees vary by instrument. You can view all information on costs HERE.

Where do I buy Tutor books?

Tutor books are available from the school.

Can I buy replacement reeds and strings?

Yes. Replacement reeds and strings can be purchased from the Admin Desk on Saturday mornings.

What is the class schedule for next year?

Our class schedules change each year based on the number of children enrolled for each instrument, so we are unable to provide schedules until enrolment begins. 

How often does my child need to attend lessons?

It is important that your child is committed for the whole year and attends regularly or other class members may be disadvantaged.

How much practice should my child be doing?

In order for your child to gain the most from the tutition available, please encourage them to practice daily. The amount of practice they should be doing for each instrument is as follows:

  • 1st year recorder or keyboard: 10 minutes daily.
  • 2nd year recorder or keyboard: 15-20 minutes daily.
  • Other instruments: 15-20+ minutes daily.

It is advisable that parents supervise their child's practice as often as possible.

Can I attend one of my child's lessons?

Yes. We welcome parents sitting in on the occassional lesson to observe their child's learning progress. We also suggest parents supervise their child's practice as often as possible.

Do you have instruments available for hire?

We have a number of instruments available for hire (except for recorders and keyboards) at reasonable rates. Hireage costs vary by instrument and can be found HERE.

What happens if my hire instrument gets damaged?

Music School instruments will have been checked before being issued for hire. During the year, repairs from any damage are payable by the parent. Fair wear and tear however, is included in the hire charge and will be paid for by the Music School.Instruments needing repair or maintenance must be returned to the Music School. We do not accept responsibility for unauthorised repairs.
