The Saxophone

The saxophone is a single-reed woodwind instrument. It was invented by Adolphe Sax over 150 years ago, and is a common instrument in modern jazz ensembles.

 

Due to the size of the alto saxophone, we recommend your child is at least 10 years old before beginning lessons on this instrument.

The Cello

The cello is a member of the string family (like the violin) and is the second largest bowed string instrument in a symphony orchestra (after the double bass).

 

It is quite a large instrument but cellos do come in several sizes. We recommend that your child starts when they are at least 8 years.

The violin is the smallest member of the string family, and is common in a wide range of ensembles in both Eastern and Western music.

 

Children as young as 6 years can begin learning the violin!

The Violin

 

The Trumpet

 

Trumpets are among the oldest instruments, dating back to 1500 BC. The trumpet is a member of the brass family and notes are played using a mixture of mouth position and three piston valves.

 

Minimum age 6 years

The Trombone

 

The trombone is another brass instrument. Pitch is determined by mouth position and the placement of the slide. 

 

Minimum age 10 years

The clarinet is a woodwind instrument with a single-reed mouthpiece and is common in both jazz and classical ensembles.

 

Minimum age 10 years

The Clarinet

 

The flute is also a member of the woodwind family but does not have a reed. Flutes are the earliest known musical instruments, with some found that date back 45,000 years.

 

Minimum age 10 years

The Flute

 

The guitar is a string instrument, plucked with fingers or a pick. Acoustic guitars have been in use for over a thousand years and are found in many styles of music.

 

Minimum age 8 years

The Recorder

The recorder is a woodwind instrument with holes that are blocked by fingers to produce different notes. It is very suitable for teaching children who are new to music.

 

Minimum age 6 years

We encourage recorder players to purchase their own instruments.
